SUMMARY
The Gospel of John is the only Gospel which mentions “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” John 13:23 tells us, “One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to Him.” John 19:26 declares, “When Jesus saw His mother there, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, 'Dear woman, here is your son.'“ John 21:7 says, “Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’” This disciple is never specifically identified, but the identity of the disciple whom Jesus loved is clear. The disciple whom Jesus loved self-identifies as the author of the gospel (John 21:24), whom most scholars believe to be the apostle John, the son of Zebedee and brother of James.
First, only the Gospel of John mentions the “disciple whom Jesus loved.” Second, John 21:2 lets us know who was fishing with Peter: “Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together...” The apostle John was a son of Zebedee (Matthew 4:21). Church history tells us that the apostle John lived into the A.D. 90s and was the last surviving apostle. Early church tradition was unanimous in identifying John as the disciple whom Jesus loved. It seems that John had a closer relationship with Jesus than any of the other disciples. Jesus and John were essentially “best friends.” Jesus entrusted John with the care of His mother, gave John the vision of the transfiguration, allowed John to witness His most amazing miracles, and later gave John the Book of Revelation.

In our opinion, John 3:16 is the most grossly mistranslated AND misinterpreted Holy Scripture in history. As I know many of you realize, it's mistranslation/misinterpretation has sadly lead to so many heresies (30,000+ sects of Protestantism, by one conservative estimate).
Most Protestants/Evangelicals affirm that by simply "believing" in Jesus, this guarantees them a ticket to Paradise. What an unfortunate trick the evil one has played on our brothers and sisters with this one.
To understand where they went wrong and what many of them are failing to understand, you have to go back to John 3:7: "Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." From here the name "Born Again Christians" was spawned. But if you dig a bit deeper, you will see that "born again" is a mistranslation. The original Greek reads "γεννηθῆναι ἄνωθεν" which means "born from above." What does it mean to be "born from above?" The answer to that is just a few lines back in John 3:5: "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." What does it mean to be born of water and of the Spirit? We know this to mean the Holy Sacrament of Orthodox Baptism! So if a "born again Christian" ever asks you if you want to accept Jesus and be "born again," respond that you have already been BORN AGAIN, OF WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT in your Orthodox Baptism!
There are no Sacraments outside of Orthodoxy, regardless of what the shameful ecumenists of our generation say. Now, who God decides to save is entirely His business and not for us to comment on. Nevertheless, we shouldn't downplay the significance and importance of being Baptized of water and of the Spirit in the One True Faith of Christ. We hope and pray that all of our heterodox brothers and sisters one day come to know the fullness of Christ's Church in Holy Orthodoxy. Pretending that their false religion has validity helps them in no way.

The Tradition of the Paschal Egg
There is a beautiful tradition within the life of the Church for believers to have as their last meal before beginning the Great Lenten Fast, to eat a hard boiled egg, white in color. This egg represents our sinful nature, and we eat this egg with the hope that the Lenten journey will bring us to repentance, and make us worthy to receive the Risen Lord Jesus Christ.
The great and holy myrrh-bearer Mary Magdalene, equal of the apostles, during a dinner with the emperor Tiberius Caesar, was speaking about Christ’s resurrection. Caesar scoffed at her, saying that a man could rise from the dead no more than the egg in her hand could turn red. Immediately, the egg turned red. This is believed to be an explanation for dyeing eggs red at Pascha.
At the end of Matins, during the Paschal service, the priest hands out a red egg, symbolizing the blood of Christ, to each worshiper. At the beginning of the Paschal feast, following the Midnight Liturgy, believers break the Lenten Fast by again eating an egg.
As we hit our red eggs together, while saying, “Christ is Risen”, we are symbolically proclaiming the truth that Christ, by his death and holy resurrection, broke the bonds and power of death. The breaking of the eggs represents the opening of the tomb, and the crashing of the doors of hell, with Christ destroying the power of darkness and death, forever.
