3 يَا إِخْوَتِي، لَا تَتَسَابَقُوا كَيْ تَجْعَلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ مُعَلِّمِينَ لِغَيْرِكُمْ فَتَزِيدُوا عَدَدَ الْمُعَلِّمِينَ! وَاذْكُرُوا أَنَّنَا، نَحْنُ الْمُعَلِّمِينَ، سَوْفَ نُحَاسَبُ حِسَاباً أَقْسَى مِنْ غَيْرِنَا. 2 فَإِنَّنَا جَمِيعاً مُعَرَّضُونَ لِلْوُقُوعِ فِي أَخْطَاءٍ كَثِيرَةٍ. وَلَكِنَّ مَنْ يُلْجِمُ لِسَانَهُ وَلاَ يُخْطِئُ فِي كَلاَمِهِ هُوَ نَاضِجٌ يَقْدِرُ أَنْ يُسَيْطِرَ عَلَى طَبِيعَتِهِ سَيْطَرَةً تَامَّةً. 3 فَحِينَ نَضَعُ لِجَاماً فِي فَمِ حِصَانٍ، نَتَمَكَّنُ مِنْ تَوْجِيهِهِ وَاقْتِيَادِهِ كَمَا نُرِيدُ. 4 وَمَهْمَا كَانَتِ السَّفِينَةُ كَبِيرَةً وَالرِّيَاحُ الَّتِي تَدْفَعُهَا قَوِيَّةً وَهَوْجَاءَ، فَبِدَفَّةٍ صَغِيرَةٍ جِدّاً يَتَحَكَّمُ الرَّبَّانُ فِيهَا وَيَسُوقُهَا إِلَى الْجِهَةِ الَّتِي يُرِيدُ. كَذَلِكَ اللِّسَانُ أَيْضاً: فَهُوَ عُضْوٌ صَغِيرٌ، 5 وَلَكِنْ مَا أَشَدَّ فَعَّالِيَّتَهُ! انْظُرُوا: إِنَّ شَرَارَةً صَغِيرَةً تُحْرِقُ غَابَةً كَبِيرَةً! 6 وَاللِّسَانُ كَالنَّارِ خَطَراً: فَهُوَ وَحْدَهُ، بَيْنَ أَعْضَاءِ الْجِسْمِ، جَامِعٌ لِلشُّرُورِ كُلِّهَا، وَيُلَوِّثُ الْجِسْمَ كُلَّهُ بِالْفَسَادِ. إِنَّهُ يُشْعِلُ دَائِرَةَ الْكَوْنِ، وَيَسْتَمِدُّ نَارَهُ مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ! 7 مِنَ السَّهْلِ عَلَى الإِنْسَانِ أَنْ يُرَوِّضَ الْوُحُوشَ وَالطُّيُورَ وَالزَّوَاحِفَ وَالْحَيَوَانَاتِ الْبَحَرِيَّةَ، بِجَمِيعِ أَجْنَاسِهَا. فَهَذَا مَا نَرَاهُ يَحْدُثُ. 8 وَلَكِنَّ أَحَداً مِنَ النَّاسِ لَا يَقْدِرُ أَنْ يُرَوِّضَ اللِّسَانَ. فَهُوَ شَرٌّ لَا يَنْضَبِطُ، مُمْتَلِئٌ بِالسَّمِّ الْقَتَّالِ! 9 بِهِ نَرْفَعُ الْحَمْدَ وَالشُّكْرَ لِلرَّبِّ وَالآبِ، وَبِهِ نُوَجِّهُ الشَّتَائِمَ إِلَى النَّاسِ الَّذِينَ خَلَقَهُمُ اللهُ عَلَى مِثَالِهِ. 10 وَهكَذَا، تَخْرُجُ الْبَرَكَاتُ وَاللَّعَنَاتُ مِنَ الْفَمِ الْوَاحِدِ. وَهَذَا، يَا إِخْوَتِي، يَجِبُ أَلاَ يَحْدُثَ أَبَداً! 11 هَلْ سَمِعْتُمْ أَنَّ نَبْعاً وَاحِداً يُعْطِي مَاءً عَذْباً وَمَاءً مُرّاً مِنْ عَيْنٍ وَاحِدَةٍ؟ 12 أَمْ هَلْ يُمْكِنُ، يَا إِخْوَتِي، أَنْ تُثْمِرَ التِّينَةُ زَيْتُوناً، أَوِ الْكَرْمَةُ تِيناً؟ كَذَلِكَ لا يُمْكِنُ أَنْ يُعْطِيَ النَّبْعُ الْمَالِحُ مَاءً عَذْباً.

13 أَبَيْنَكُمْ بَعْضُ الْحُكَمَاءِ وَالْفُهَمَاءِ؟ إِذَنْ، عَلَى هؤُلاَءِ أَنْ يَسْلُكُوا سُلُوكاً حَسَناً، مُظْهِرِينَ بِأَعْمَالِهِمْ تِلْكَ الْوَدَاعَةَ الَّتِي تَتَّصِفُ بِهَا الْحِكْمَةُ (الحَقِيقِيَّةُ). 14 أَمَّا إِنْ كَانَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ مَمْلُوءَةً بِمَرَارَةِ الحَسَدِ وَبِالتَّحَزُّبِ، فَلاَ تَفْتَخِرُوا بِحِكْمَتِكُمْ، وَلاَ تُنْكِرُوا الْحَقَّ. 15 إِنَّ هذِهِ الْحِكْمَةَ الَّتِي تَدَّعُونَهَا لَيْسَتْ نَازِلَةً مِنْ عِنْدِ اللهِ، بَلْ هِيَ «حِكْمَةٌ» أَرْضِيَّةٌ بَشَرِيَّةٌ شَيْطَانِيَّةٌ. 16 فَحَيْثُ تَكُونُ مَرَارَةُ الْحَسَدِ وَالتَّحَزُّبُ، يَنْتَشِرُ الْخِلاَفُ وَالْفَوْضَى وَجَمِيعُ الشُّرُورِ. 17 أَمَّا الْحِكْمَةُ النَّازِلَةُ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللهِ، فَهِيَ نَقِيَّةٌ طَاهِرَةٌ، قَبْلَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ. وَهِيَ أَيْضاً تَدْفَعُ صَاحِبَهَا إِلَى الْمُسَالَمَةِ وَالتَّرَفُّقِ. كَمَا أَنَّهَا مُطَاوِعَةٌ، مَمْلُوءَةٌ بِالرَّحْمَةِ وَالأَعْمَالِ الصَّالِحَةِ، مُسْتَقِيمَةٌ: لَا تُمَيِّزُ وَلاَ تَنْحَازُ وَلاَ تُنَافِقُ. 18 وَالْبِرُّ هُوَ ثَمَرَةُ مَا يَزْرَعُهُ فِي سَلاَمٍ صَانِعُو السَّلاَمِ.

The Work of Faith: Controlling What We Say 3​ My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.   See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh. Godly Counsel Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace
