Middlesbrough Councillor Ian Blades has told TeesPix.Photos "I've just left the meeting site, all is very quiet for now."

The protest is scheduled to start in 3 hours at 2pm local time.
Reports from the organisers of the protest today suggest that the event will start at 2pm at the Cenotaph on Linthorpe Road (Albert Park) at 2pm before moving to Centre Square on Albert Road close to the towns main shopping district where speeches will be made.
Arriva are suspending buses on Linthorpe Road from 1PM today. The suspension will remain in place for much of the day.

Buses will still be running using alternative routes to reach the bus station, but this will be under constant review throughout the day.

Statement from Middlesbrough Independent Councillors Association (MICA):

Stay Peaceful and Stay Safe!

There was shocking scenes across the country again yesterday as what started out as peaceful protests turn into all out riots.

As many of you are aware, a protest is taking place in Middlesbrough today. It’s a democratic right to peacefully protest but again, we must strongly condemn any actions that cross the line into criminal behaviour.

Let us be clear: if you engage in vandalism, looting, scrapping with the police, or shouting racial slurs, it’s highly likely that you will be caught on camera. If not by CCTV or the police but by members of the public.

The police will not hesitate to bring those responsible to justice, and the courts will throw the book at them and rightly so!

Look at these videos all on social media this morning of the idiots damaging their communities.

We really don’t want Middlesbrough following suit.

Show the rest of the UK how it’s done and please stay peaceful.
Middlesbrough Cllrs Dennis McCabe & Christine Cooper have issued an appeal:
"PLEASE STAY HOME TODAY AND AWAY FROM MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN CENTRE.

It’s not worth going over the have a look as someone may get hurt."
All quiet for now police patrolling and businesses have closed or boarded up their shops
