The Day of the Holy Trinity, the feast of Pentecost, is called the birthday of the Church. It was from that moment, after the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, that they grasped everything the Lord had told them, and everything He had taught them. And now, encouraged by the Holy Spirit, they were ready to go and preach. They were no longer afraid of anything, for the Lord Himself was with them, and the Truth was with them.

Every day the Church experienced significant growth, and more and more new members joined it. At first the apostles taught among the Jews, and then their preaching spread to the gentiles, to other peoples. What is the kontakion of today’s feast about?

“When the Most High came down and confused tongues, He divided the nations. But when He distributed the tongues of fire He called all to unity. Wherefore, with one mind we glorify the All-Holy Spirit.”

The kontakion speaks of two actions of the Holy Spirit. When the people madly building the Tower of Babel, the Lord confused the tongues to bring people to reason, confusing their single language so that they would cease to understand each other and stop—at least for a minute—what they were doing. And now the Lord, by distributing tongues of fire, is calling for unity of all in His Church, where the wondrous Divine gifts are kept as in a receptacle—primarily of course, these are the Sacraments and the teachings of our Lord.

Interestingly, in Church Slavonic the word “yazyk”, in addition to meaning “tongue” and “speech”, also means “people”, or “nation”; so the Lord calls for unity of not just some single, God-chosen people, but of all nations who will believe in Him.

I have been amazed that some are utterly in doubt as to whether or not the holy Virgin is able to be called the Mother of God. For if our Lord Jesus Christ is God, how should the holy Virgin who bore him not be the Mother of God?

✝️St. Cyril of Alexandria (June 9/ June 22), Letter to the Monks of Egypt 1 (427)
"How corrupt I am become through sin! Anything bad, evil, impure immediately enters into my thoughts and is felt in my heart, whilst anything good, right, pure, holy— is often only thought and spoken of, and not felt. Woe unto me! for as yet evil is nearer to my heart than good."
St. John of Kronstadt

A beautiful icon of Christ walking on the water and saving Peter reminds is that even Saint Apostle Peter had to learn that without God we are nothing . The moment we start to think too high about ourseves and rely on ourselves, we go down

Simplicity is divine
God is an incomplex, most perfect Being; that is, the purest holiness, the purest good and truth; and in order to be in union with God, in order to be one spirit with Him (for we are from Him), we must acquire, through His grace, the most perfect simplicity of goodness, holiness, and love.
St John of Kronstadt
Psalms 41:11-13
By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me. 12. And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever. 13. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.

“We do not change the boundaries marked out by our Fathers. We keep the Tradition we have received. If we begin to lay down the Law of the Church even in the smallest things, the whole edifice will fall to the ground in no short time.”

+ St. John of Damascus
Proverbs 28:1-2
The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. 2. For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.
“Fresh temptation sometimes arises with affliction and oppression—a hardness, numbness, and insensibility of the heart to everything true, good, and holy; we feel like a stone or a block, without faith, without the capability of praying, without hope in God’s mercy, without love.
How sad it is to feel like a stone or a log, without faith and love, when we were created to believe, feel, hope, and love !
And we must bear this patiently, and pray to God to roll away the stone of insensibility from the doors of the tomb of our heart...”
St. John of Kronstadt
We don’t always feel spiritually high-minded , we struggle and fall, it’s part of our earthly life. All we can is to held God’s hand, pray no matter what, even if we feel empty. Nobody asks us for fountain of emotions, but we are expected and encouraged to constant prayer.

The Church is shown in the Scripture as a Family

God is our Heavenly Father and we are brothers and sisters. This kind of relationship erases barriers of nationality, race, age, gender, and any kind of personal differences. We are all called to love one another. We are brothers and sisters in Adam by nature and in Christ by spirit.

“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10).

Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity” (1 Timothy 5:1-2).

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).

“And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother’” (Matthew 12:49-50).
Proverbs 28:3-4
A poor man that oppresseth the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaveth no food. 4. They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them.
Proverbs 28:5-6
Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the Lord understand all things. 6. Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.
Divine Providence is not fate. God does not control every moment of our lives. There are things that are in our power and our free-will only, or it is will of other people, or consequences of corrupted nature. Providence of God in our lives means that He provides for us all that is necessary for our salvation. Everything we have God gives us for the purpose of working out our salvation.

St. John Chrysostom says that we know very little about things and reasons, and our conclusions are often wrong, while God is able to suggest special path among many to salvation for every single person, with love and compassion.
Proverbs 28:7
Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.
